Five Dental Resolutions to Start 2018

New Years Resolution 2018 - Oral HealthTaking care of your teeth is an important part of having a healthy body. Many of our patients are looking for better, more holistic ways to care for their body and their health. This often includes more gentle ways to care for their mouth and teeth. As you head into 2018, you may want to consider making a switch in how you care for your teeth and consider a new approach to dental health care. HPS Advanced has some great resolutions to help you make 2018 the healthiest year yet.

Resolution #1: Step Up Your At-Home Care

If you haven’t been doing a great job of brushing your teeth and flossing, make your first dental health resolution of 2018, to improve your at-home care. A good routine of at home care is the first step to having a healthier mouth. And, because many other health conditions can be directly linked to the health of your mouth, you may find that just by improving how you brush and floss, you feel better and enjoy a healthier 2018.

Resolution #2: Change Your Diet

This resolution may be more challenging, but sugary foods are directly linked to tooth decay, among other health concerns. Incorporating healthy, natural foods into your diet, and getting rid of the sugars and processed foods will keep your mouth cleaner, and your body healthier. While you are cutting out sugars, make sure you are also adding in foods that are great for your teeth. Things like low-fat dairy products and dark leafy greens that are high in calcium are great for promoting good dental health.

Resolution #3: Find a Holistic Dental Practitioner

Holistic dentistry is quickly becoming the most popular dental care option. Practices like HPS Advanced Dental provide care that focuses on the wellbeing of your body and your mind, not just your teeth. Holistic dentistry provides care that is based on good scientific research, and uses methods and materials that are not only effective for caring for your mouth but are also healthy for your body and the environment. If you have stress and fear of the dentist, a holistic practice is a great way to make the dentist easier. The holistic approach to dentistry uses things like essential oils to calm patients during procedures, and an avoidance of products that are known to cause harm to the body, such as Mercury and latex.

Resolution #4: Get Rid of Silver Fillings

At HPS Advanced Dental, we strive for each of our patients to have Mercury free smiles. For many years, the only option patients had for filling cavities was mercury amalgam fillings. These are the “silver” fillings that many people over the age of 30 have in their mouth. The problem with mercury amalgam fillings is that research has shown that even this tiny amount of mercury can cause significant health issues. We encourage all of our patients to get rid of their mercury amalgam fillings, and have them replaced with resin fillings. Many of our patients that have had this work done have noted feeling better and struggling less with issues like migraines and fatigue.

Resolution #5: Cut Out Tobacco

This is a total body resolution for sure. Tobacco products, whether cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco are terrible for your body. We know that the research shows that tobacco is a leading cause of a variety of cancers, but smoking and chewing tobacco is also really hard on your teeth. If you are looking for a single fix to having a healthier smile and you use tobacco products, cut them out of your routines. Your teeth will be whiter, your breath will be fresher and your body will feel better.

Research shows us that good dental health is a key component to a healthier body. So, your approach to dental care should focus not just on your teeth, but your overall mental and physical health.
