The Proper Way to Brush Your Teeth By Shelby Township Dentist

Hi, my name is Nicky Goolsby. I’m a registered dental hygienist here at HPS Advanced Dental Care, located in Shelby Township, Michigan. I’m here to talk to you today about a popular topic, that comes up with a lot of my patients. They always ask me, is there a proper brushing technique? The answer is, yes, there actually is.

When it comes to brushing your teeth, you want to be sure to angle the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and flare the bristles underneath the gum tissue. As you can see here how the bristles are flared underneath the gums to get that bacteria out from underneath the gum line. You want to work the toothbrush in a circular motion all the way around the teeth. This is done for two minutes all over the mouth. On the flat side, or the chewing side of the teeth, you want to hold the toothbrush flat, against the top of the teeth and go back and forth so that way you’re getting out any plaque and bacteria from in the grooves in your teeth that may cause decay.

This is the same for children as well. A lot of times they bite, and brush all over the teeth, in a circular motion just like this. When we’re brushing we want to brush for at least two minutes, at least twice a day. You can give us a call at HPS Advanced Dental Care at 248-652-0024.
